The materials used are Acrylic, vinyl, and a poly weave (blend of the 2). The least costly is the vinyl, the longest lasting is the acrylic. You may have seen some with a metal wrap around it in the closed position, there is also a rubber wrap. Either of those are to protect the fabric from the sun and weather while not in use. They will definitely extend the life of the awning.
